The students in Agape Christi Academy’s oldest class will achieve a milestone next fall when they enter 7th grade. In keeping with the classical learning stages, 7th grade marks the transition from the Grammar Stage to Logic Stage.
What students learn, and how they learn it, undergoes a significant transformation at this age. Logic stage students are no longer content with only the “what” of a subject, as they learned in Grammar school. Now they want the challenge of digging into the “why.”
A Classical Christian education works with the development of the student by training them to use logic to answer the “why.” Christian students need to have an enduring reason or argument for believing something, particularly for the hope that they have (1 Peter 3:15). The culture’s idea of reasoning won’t cut it.
The first step for Logic students is to see the difference between the structure of an argument and its content. They can then examine arguments for validity and truth based on the standard of God’s Word. This is not done to grasp power by besting others in internet debates, but rather so they can correctly evaluate new ideas they encounter and make their thinking obedient to Christ (2 Cor 10:5).
In order to teach students to reason well, a formal logic class takes place during the Logic Stage. In addition, every course in this stage is taught with a heavy emphasis on logical reasoning. Prominent class activities include discussions, debates, guided critiques, and researching the “why” behind ideas and events.
